Many patients have dental fears and anxieties that are worsened by the words ‘root canal.’ Friends, family, and even the media have created an atmosphere of fear surrounding this procedure.
Generally, root canals are no longer painful with most patients describing the procedure as painless. Through the use of modern technology and more effective anesthetics, the root canal is no longer a painful procedure; yet the stigma surrounding them has stuck!
So, what happens if you don’t get a root canal when you need one?
If our dental team at Ivanhoe Dental Group have recommended a root canal and you do not get it, serious complications can occur. A root canal is recommended, in most cases, because the pulp within the tooth is infected. The infection can spread from the tooth to the gum and jaw bone, via the decaying pulp. The decaying, or infected, pulp can even cause you to lose your tooth or part of your jaw!
An untreated root canal can also lead to dental abscesses, and even life threatening sepsis, heart attack or stroke
The only alternative to a root canal, in most cases, is extraction. Though extraction is often deemed an alternative, the best option is always to save your natural teeth – if possible.
