Sugary Drinks: Most parents know that their children should avoid soda, but have you considered that many juices also contain high amounts of sugar and acids? Acids in citrus juices, such as orange juice, can also cause enamel damage. While we don’t suggest you avoid orange juice, have your child brush their teeth at least 30 minute AFTER drinking juices high in acid, as brushing too soon can also cause trouble!
Sticky Snacks: We traditionally think of sticky foods as candy, but gummy multivitamins on the market are also sticky! The sugar found in these vitamins is not what causes the damage to your child’s enamel. Sticky gummies spend a longer amount of time on your teeth, and are more difficult for your saliva to wash away. Lollipops, gummies, and other hard candies expose your teeth to sugar longer than other candies.
Dried Fruits: Most parents never think twice about giving their child dried fruits or raisins, but similar to the gummy candies, they expose your child’s teeth to sugar for a longer length of time then a non-dried version.
Starchy Foods: Pasta, bread, and even potatoes all contain starch. While many of these items are staples in our meals, they can also cause damage to your child’s teeth. When these foods get stuck between our teeth, the starch can quickly convert to sugar on your teeth.
