Routine dental cleanings are important for maintaining good oral health. Professional cleaning by a hygienist removes plaque, tartar, and stains that develope on the teeth, even with careful brushing and flossing. People with healthy teeth and gums, should have their teeth cleaned every 6 months. Those patients with gum disease, should get their teeth cleaned every 3-4 months.
How its done
You can expect your dental cleaning to last about one hour. A licensed hygienist will do the cleaning, and a dentist will come in for an exam at the end.
If the patient is due for x-rays, they will be taken at the beginning of the cleaning appointment, and will be read by the dentist during the exam. The hygienist will evaluate and measure the gum tissues to look for receeding gums, boneloss, and other abnormalities. Then the teeth are cleaned by hand and ultrasonic scalers. Finally, the hygienist will polish the teeth to remove any remaining plaque and stains.
