What is a Dental Emergency?

Patient in riverdale il in pain receiving emergency care

A dental emergency is a situation that cannot wait for a regular office visit. When a dental emergency occurs, it needs immediate attention the same as any other medical emergencies do. The following symptoms are signs of a dental emergency:

  • Severe toothache.
  • Chipped, broken or cracked tooth.
  • Knocked-out tooth
  • Bleeding gums that won’t stop.
  • Loose adult tooth.
  • Injury to the jaw.
  • An abscess in your mouth or gums.
  • Painful inflammation in your gums.
  • Lost adult tooth.
  • Crowns or filling have fallen out.
  • Swelling in your gums, cheeks or jaw.

Delaying emergency care could lead to worse pain, infection, loss of a tooth, and a longer recovery time. It is important to see a professional quickly so that long-term damage can be avoided. You do not need to suffer with tooth pain, bleeding or any other emergency symptoms! Call our emergency line at (708) 849-8627 right now to speak with a member of our team.

What to Expect at an Emergency Dentist Appointment

When you visit our practice for an emergency dental situation, there are a few things you can expect to happen:

  1. First, we will find a way to manage any pain so you can be comfortable for your appointment.
  2. The next step will be to examine the affected area to diagnose the problem. This examination may include X-ray imaging of the teeth or gums.
  3. Once the dentist has diagnosed the problem, they will help you understand what caused your dental emergency and what your treatment options are. You will be able to make a fully-informed choice on how you would like us to take care of it.
  4. After you decide, our team will begin treatment immediately to handle the emergency.
  5. If you need more extensive emergency dental services, our emergency dentists will ensure you are comfortable, able to manage your pain, and understand how to care for your teeth until you can be seen for more complex procedures.

First Aid Tips for Dental Emergencies

If you have a dental emergency, there are a few things you can do to help alleviate pain and protect your teeth on your way to your emergency dental appointment:

  • Knocked-Out Tooth

    1. Use a cotton ball, a clean rag, or some gauze to stop any bleeding from your socket. Bleeding should stop within 10 to 15 minutes.
    2. Find the tooth (if you can), pick it up by the crown (not the roots) and rinse it off with clean water.
    3. Try to put the tooth back into its socket. If that isn't possible, store the tooth in a cup of milk and bring it with you to your emergency appointment.
  • Severe Toothache

    1. Rinse your mouth gently with warm water to help clean the area and dislodge any stuck particles of food.
    2. Alternatively, rinse with salt water using one teaspoon of table salt in eight ounces of warm water, which can help relieve the pain.
    3. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your jaw to reduce swelling.
    4. Stick with simple food and drinks, like soup and plain water, until you can see your emergency dentist.
  • Chipped or Broken Tooth

    1. Rinse out your mouth gently with warm water to clean away any blood and tooth fragments.
    2. Use a cotton ball, clean rag, or gauze to stop any bleeding, either by holding it against the wound with your hand or biting down on it. Bleeding should stop within 10 to 15 minutes.
    3. Find the chipped or broken section of tooth, if you can, and rinse it with clean water.
    4. Take the tooth fragment to your emergency dental appointment in a cup of milk.
    5. Use an ice pack against your jaw to relieve any pain or swelling.
